Andrew is a man who has been beaten down in his life on multiple occasions, but has always found the strength to get back up again. Being cast off by his family, abducted and experimented upon by aliens, having to cope with having new abilities in a world where people were just as likely to see him as something inhuman as they were to see him as a hero. These are only the major sufferance’s he’s had to endure up until his canon point, and he has never once let any of them stop him from living for himself. As he tells Neron, one of many rulers in Hell, later on in canon, “People have been trying to break me my entire life”. His strength doesn’t just lay in his physical prowess; he has an impeccable strength of spirit as well that urges him forward no matter what. At a glance, Andrew is typically calm and level-headed. He’s not easy to shock or intimidate and has an easy-going manner that takes things in stride. Ripping an alien’s arm off? Piece of cake, let’s mount it above the bed. Having date night ruined because the boyfriend would rather fight thugs? Sure, why not. But Andrew is also a deeply emotional man, and when he’s made to feel angry, hurt, or threatened, he feels it at a maximum level. His anger towards Midnighter during the time he had thought he was a traitor was all consuming, making him withdrawn and focused solely on his target. Hurting him by targeting the ones he loves is another sure way to both get his attention and draw his complete ire. Another important aspect about Andrew is how he feels about secrets. He doesn’t like them, but it goes deeper than that. His choosing to come out to his family was his first refusal to live a lie and it’s a decision he’s stood by for the rest of his life following. He refuses to be closeted in any way, whether it is relationship based or worked related. His issues with Stormwatch lie in the way it runs completely under the radar and in secret. And at one point during the beginning of their relationship, Midnighter suggests that they keep a low profile about their feelings for each other, specifically not touching each other while their teammates are around, and Andrew responds negatively. While not considering himself a ‘hero’ as the likes of the Justice League and others, even stating early on to Stormwatch that he had no intention of being so, Andrew cares deeply about protecting people , especially when it comes to ensuring that no other child has to go through the things he and Midnighter did. He wants to inspire hope in people, that there’s someone looking out for them. But he’s as vicious and dangerous to his foes as he is gentle and caring to the people he saves. He has no qualms about killing if necessary, and it tends to be necessary more times than not.
